Your Space, Your Voice

Hey, all!  I know it’s been a couple months since I’ve posted, but I found a writing contest via Facebook that has motivated me to sit down and write.  I am participating in the Writing Contest: You Are Enough, hosted by Positive Writer.”

The reason I started my blog was to create a space for myself where I could share my journey with cancer…  Where I could find the words to share how I was feeling, what I was going through, and to help those who may be going through a similar journey.  But it wasn’t easy for me to start.

When I first was diagnosed with breast cancer, I wanted to write about it.  But it was extremely difficult to find my words, and I just didn’t have the energy. Once I came out of my fog, I thought more about it.  All these intense thoughts and feelings were rolling around in my head, but I couldn’t get them to calm down.  So I sat myself down in front of my computer one day and figured out how I was going to do get them out of my head.  Once I created my blog space, I just started writing.  I wrote down EVERYTHING I was feeling, even if it wasn’t grammatically correct yet.  I just got it ALL out and then I went back and edited it and eventually created my first blog post.

So, why am I telling you this?  I wasn’t sure my story would be compelling enough that people would be interested in reading about it.  I wasn’t sure I would be able to express myself in ta way that would make sense.  And… I wasn’t sure that people would find hope in it.  But it became ALL of those things!  And I would never have known that had I never tried.

I’ve had many opportunities open up because of my blog and I’m very grateful for that.  But again, these may never have happened had I not put myself out there, even if I was unsure and not confident.  (I still am often unsure and not confident.)  Sometimes it takes me a while to even find the motivation to write, but when I do, I just get it done and honestly I usually feel a lot better!

So, TRY!  If you are struggling with motivation or confidence, just try writing something down.  It doesn’t matter what, it doesn’t matter how much, and it doesn’t matter how good, but you have to START somewhere.  Like anything else in life, practice makes perfect and as you write, it will get better.  You will find YOUR voice.  Don’t focus on the numbers: how many words, how many readers, how many posts…  Find a motivation or a reason for writing and just do it!  Do it for yourself, for your friends, for the random stranger you passed on the street.  It doesn’t matter for who, just find a reason to write.  It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be real.
